The city of Chomedey only lasted four years before becoming a neighbourhood of Laval. Named after the founder of Montreal, Paul Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve, Chomedey was founded in 1961 when the municipalities of Abord-à-Plouffe, Renaud and Saint-Martin amalgamated. In 1965, Chomedey merged with thirteen other municipalities to form the city of Laval. It was the mayor of Chomedey, Jean-Noël Lavoie, who became the first mayor of Laval.

Chomedey is Laval’s most densely populated neighbourhood, home to a number of cultural communities, including the largest Greek community in the province. It also boasts the Carrefour Laval, the largest shopping centre in Quebec.
